This week’s post comes from Kelsey Bennett. Kelsey is new to our team and the guy you’re most likely to speak to first when you call our Helpdesk. This week he’s given us a Top Tip for cleaning your device (and we don’t mean with a feather duster!)
One of the most common issues with our computers that we face both at home and at work is the speed. It seems that the more you use them, the slower they can get, and this is especially true for people who work online for most of their working day.
There is a great piece of free software called CCleaner that you can download for your PC or Mac. It removes all of the junk files hiding away in your computer that you never even knew were there!
Once you click the download button the application will automatically download.
Once it’s done, open it up and the installer will run. Choose your language and click next. You’ll be given a bunch of tick boxes which allow for personalization.
I’d recommending adding it to your desktop or start menu for easy access as well as allowing it to check for updates automatically. Enabling intelligent cookie scan means that when you run the cleaner, it will remember your saved passwords, emails and useful information for your favourite websites, rather than removing them. So I recommend you click this one as well. Once this is done, click install, in a matter of seconds it will be done and you can run the application by clicking the tick box and selecting finish.
Here’s the interface:
All of the boxes you need will already be ticked, if you don’t want the program to delete a specific type of file, for example Cookies, history or your download history then you can choose to untick the corresponding box on the left and these items will be excluded from the clean.
You will notice that there are two tabs. One of them goes into specific windows data (or Mac) and the other will clean applications junk files specifically, app by app. Take a little time to make sure you are only removing what you want to remove, generally this is a very user friendly and safe application so you shouldn’t experience any trouble.
Make sure your browsers are all closed, as well as anything else that you’re cleaning and hit “Run Cleaner”
And there you have it! Literally thousands of files, clogging up valuable memory have now been removed from your PC. Give your browsers a reboot and off you go.
I tend to do this once every two weeks, depending on how much I’ve been using my PC. It will run in the background very discreetly and alert you when there is a build-up of excess junk. Staying on top of this can really improve the general health of your computer over-time.
NOTE FROM THE TEAM: -At this point we want to add a DISCLAIMER Please exercise utmost caution when using this and similar programs as you could easily delete critical files to run your device. If you have any queries whatsoever please call our Helpdesk. 01425 600 066.
